I’ve been waffling on putting an awning on my 4Runner for a while. I never had one on my 3rd Gen, however I did buy a Slumberjack Roadhouse Tarp a few years ago thinking it would meet my needs for camping, but I never took it out of the bag. It just seemed a bit too cumbersome to set up by myself.
There was a post on one of the many Facebook groups I follow that alerted me to a sale at napaonline.com where they were selling their Maxi Trac awning for $90, shipping included. I heard good things about these awnings and the price point was right for me to give it a try.
I thought I’d try the awning out on my 5th Gen since that is the one I typically take to the beach, which is where I could use some protection from the sun.
Here is the video I shot showing how I installed the awning on my Southern Style OffRoad (SSO) aftermarket roof rack (click the image below for the video).
I’ve used the awning on a few trips now and am pleasantly surprised. For the money, it is every bit as good as some of the name brand awnings that cost 3 or 4 times more. Only time will tell how long it stands up to continued use. I’ll be sure to keep you updated.
